GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
This is a competitive class trainee position. The period of trainee service shall be not less than one year nor more than two years from the date of appointment from an appropriate eligible list, the service to be of such designated length as to satisfy the training and experience requirement for the Police Service Aide. Upon the satisfactory completion of the designated trainee service, which also serves as the probationary period, and successful completion of a 40 hour training program at the Nassau County Police Academy, the Police Service Aide Trainee shall attain permanent status as Police Service Aide.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under direct supervision, the position requires the use of judgment in receiving training and assisting in performing various support functions.

TYPICAL DUTIES

Learns and assists in receiving, storing, and releasing property and evidence.
*
2.
Learns and assists in checking items and information received.
3.
Learns and assists in entering Orders of Protection into the Computerized History Information Enforcement Files (CHIEF) System database, and verifies same, by telephone, to Police Officers in the field.
*
4.
Learns and assists in processing sealing orders of arrest records.
*
5.
Learns and assists in fingerprinting applicants for the Police Department, Sheriff, Social Services, and others, such as pistol license applicants, naturalization, and other applicants, as required.
*
6.
Learns and assists in receiving and distributing subpoenas for police records and appearances of police officers.
*
7.
Learns and assists in receiving incident or summons information via the telephone from law enforcement personnel, determining whether all information needed has been received, and entering the information into computer databases.
*
8.
Learns and assists in retrieving information for officers regarding driver's licenses, vehicle registration, pistol permits, past crimes, etc.
*
9.
Learns and assists in performing CHIEF System and New York State Police Information Network (NYSPIN) database entries of all warrants issued by various courts in Nassau County.
*
10.Learns and assists in processing requests from various agencies for previous record and warrant checks.
*
11.Learns and assists in collecting and processing relevant fees.
*
12.Learns and assists in coordinating arrest paperwork, and ensures that required documents are forwarded for arraignment.
13.Learns and assists in developing efficient storing methods, as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Ability to receive and store property and evidence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Graduation from high school.

Necessary Special Requirements
Continuing possession of an appropriate class, valid Driver's License issued by the State of New York.

NOTE:Trainee positions are subject to Rules XVII and XIX of the Nassau County Civil Service Rules in relation to term of probation.
