EXAMINATION PROGRAM EXPLANATION Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis. The exam will be held Monday through Friday, on an "as needed" basis. This Commission reserves the right to alter any or all administrative aspects of the exam. Names of successful candidates will be removed from the eligible list at the time of appointment to a position or one year after being placed on the list. Successful candidates may re-file for this examination one year after being placed on the list. Candidates who do not pass may re-file one year after the date they participated in the examination.

CANDIDATES WHO WISH TO PARTICIPATE IN MORE THAN ONE OF THE THREE CLERICAL CONTINUOUS RECRUITMENT EXAMINATIONS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR THE NASSAU HEALTH CARE CORPORATION MUST APPLY FOR THEM AT THE SAME TIME ON THE SAME APPLICATION; CANDIDATES WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY EXAMINATION IN THE SERIES AGAIN FOR ONE YEAR AS STATED IN THE ABOVE EXAMINATION PROGRAM EXPLANATION.
SALARY: $21,011 - $39,810. Note: Appointments will be offered at $30,947 in order to satisfy recruitment needs.

FEE: NON-REFUNDABLE Processing Fee must be submitted for each separately numbered examination for which you apply. A certified bank check or money order (include examination number(s) ) MADE PAYABLE TO NASSAU COUNTY must be submitted with your application, NO CASH OR PERSONAL CHECKS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Applications submitted without proper payment will be rejected without review.
APPLICATION FEE WAIVER: A waiver of application fee will be allowed if you are unemployed and primarily responsible for the support of a household. In addition, a waiver of application fee will be allowed if you are determined eligible for Medicaid, or receiving Supplemental Security Income payments, or Public Assistance (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families/Family Assistance or Safety Net Assistance) or are certified Job Training Partnership Act/Workforce Investment Act eligible through a State or local social service agency. All claims for application fee waiver are subject to verification. RESIDENCY: SEE ITEM NO. 5 OF GENERAL INFORMATION.
DUTIES: Performs general clerical duties which follow well established methods and procedures; performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be met on or before the date of the written test:
| Graduation from high school;
or |
| Two years of satisfactory experience performing clerical tasks. |

SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION: A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:
1. SPELLING - These questions test your ability to spell words that are used in written business communications.
2. ALPHABETIZING - These questions test your ability to file material in alphabetical order.
3. RECORD KEEPING - These questions evaluate your ability to perform common record keeping tasks. The test consists of two or more "sets" of questions; each set concerning a different problem. Typical record keeping problems might involve the organization or collation of data from several sources; scheduling; maintaining a record system using running balances; or completion of a table summarizing data using totals, subtotals, averages and percents.
4. CLERICAL OPERATIONS WITH LETTERS AND NUMBERS - These questions test your skills and abilities in clerical operations involving, comparing, checking and counting. The questions require you to follow the specific directions given for each question which may involve alphabetizing, comparing, checking and counting given groups of letters and/or numbers.
NOTE: The use of a quiet, hand held solar or battery powered calculator is recommended for this examination. Devices with typewriter keyboards such as computers, spell-checkers, personal digital assistants, address books, language translators, dictionaries, and any similar devices are prohibited.
NOTE: A study guide for this examination is available on the New York State Department of Civil Service Web site at http://www.cs.state.ny.us/testing/localtestguides.cfm (click on Clerical Series link). In addition, a copy of this Test Guide may also be obtained in person at our office at 40 Main Street, Hempstead, New York.
Candidates may also obtain this guide by sending to our office a self-addressed 4" X 9" (business size) envelope with 59¢ postage. On the back flap of the envelope write "Clerk I Study Guide". Please note that this guide will be the only item sent back to you in that envelope.
Exam Scoring and Placement on the Eligible List: The minimum passing score for the written test is 70. Your place on the eligible list is determined by your written score. If you fail the exam, you must wait one year before re-starting the exam process, which begins with the filing of a new application.
