DUTIES: Performs routine clerical duties using a keyboard all or part of the time; performs general clerical work and filing; performs related duties, as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be met on or before the date the application is filed:

SUBJECTS OF EXAMINATION: This examination will consist of three parts:
1. A weighted multiple-choice written, and;
2. A weighted performance test in typing, and;
3. A qualifying Spanish language oral proficiency test.
THE SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION FOR THE WRITTEN TEST will be designed to test for knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in the following areas:
1. SPELLING - These questions test your ability to spell words that are used in written business communications.
2. ALPHABETIZING - These questions test your ability to file material in alphabetical order.
3. RECORD KEEPING - These questions evaluate your ability to perform common record keeping tasks. The test consists of two or more "sets" of questions; each set concerning a different problem. Typical record keeping problems might involve the organization or collation of data from several sources; scheduling; maintaining a record system using running balances; or completion of a table summarizing data using totals, subtotals, averages and percents.
4. CLERICAL OPERATIONS WITH LETTERS AND NUMBERS - These questions test your skills and abilities in clerical operations involving, comparing, checking and counting. The questions require you to follow the specific directions given for each question which may involve alphabetizing, comparing, checking and counting given groups of letters and/or numbers.
NOTE: The use of a quiet, hand held solar or battery powered calculator is recommended for this examination. Devices with typewriter keyboards such as computers, spell-checkers, personal digital assistants, address books, language translators, dictionaries, and any similar devices are prohibited.
NOTE: A study guide for this examination is available on the New York State Department of Civil Service Web site at http://www.cs.state.ny.us/testing/localtestguides.cfm (click on Clerical Series link). In addition, a copy of this Test Guide may also be obtained in person at our office at 40 Main Street, Hempstead, New York.
Candidates may also obtain this guide by sending to our office a self-addressed 4" X 9" (business size) envelope with 59¢ postage. On the back flap of the envelope write "Clerk Typist I, Bilingual Study Guide". Please note that this guide will be the only item sent back to you in that envelope.
Typing Test: Will be held on a p.c. A minimum speed of 35 words per minute is required. The typing test will be given on the same day as the written test - but there will most likely be a significant time gap between the two. Candidates should plan on spending the entire day at the exam site.
Oral Bilingual Test: Will be held at a later date. Only candidates who pass both the written test and the typing test will be scheduled to take the oral test in Spanish. The test is designed to evaluate the candidate's proficiency in relation to the position that is being filled. The Commission reserves the right to administer the oral bilingual test to only those candidates whose scores on the written and typing tests are high enough for appointment.

Exam Scoring and Placement on the Eligible List: The minimum passing score for both the written test and the typing test is 70. The bilingual test will be scored on a pass/fail basis. You must pass all three parts of the exam to be placed on the eligible list. Your place on the eligible list is determined by calculating your written and typing scores and converting them to a final score. If you fail any part of the exam, you must wait one year before re-starting the exam process, which begins with the filing of a new application.
