GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Supervises, coordinates, reviews, and evaluates all activities of a clinical specialty laboratory in the Department of Pathology and Laboratories in the Nassau Health Care Corporation; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties involve the use of considerable independent judgment in managing a hospital clinical specialty laboratory, supervising the interpretation and reporting of test results, and performing advanced laboratory testing. As a result of this added responsibility, this position is distinguished from that of Assistant Clinical Laboratory Director.

TYPICAL DUTIES

1.
Formulates and recommends policies relating to laboratory testing in the clinical specialty.
*
2.
Develops and evaluates all clinical specialty laboratory procedures, quality control methods, and quality assurance procedures.
*
3.
Develops and evaluates new methodologies and instrumentation to be used in the clinical specialty laboratory testing procedures.
*
4.
Advises physicians on diagnostic interpretation of laboratory reports.
*
5.
Supervises the proper processing of all specimens submitted to the laboratory.
*
6.
Supervises the interpretation and reporting of specimen test results.
*
7.
Supervises and trains all laboratory personnel in new and improved clinical specialty testing methods and techniques.
*
8.
Performs advanced laboratory testing in the clinical specialty.
9.
Supervises laboratory participation in the graduate medical education program of the Nassau Health Care Corporation.

10.
Assists in the development and submission of the annual budget for the clinical specialty laboratory.
*
11.
Evaluates and recommends purchase of new laboratory equipment.

Ability to analyze and interpret complex technical data.

Ability to plan, supervise, and perform advanced laboratory testing in the clinical specialty.

Ability to train and supervise personnel in new and improved laboratory testing methods and techniques in the clinical specialty.

Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of subordinate technical and non-technical personnel.

Ability to prepare, and supervise preparation of, detailed, comprehensive, clear, and concise scientific and technical reports.

Ability to express oneself effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, accrediting and regulatory agencies, officials, and the medical staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Continuing possession of a certificate of qualification in the appropriate specialty field, issued by the New York State Department of Health
and
Six years of satisfactory, post-doctoral, laboratory testing experience in the specialty field, including two years supervising subordinates performing such tests.
