GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Builds, maintains, and repairs wooden articles, equipment, and structures in the Nassau County Correctional Center; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties require the use of judgment and skill, and the work is reviewed for quality, accuracy, and completeness.

TYPICAL DUTIES
*1.Installs, alters, repairs, and maintains a variety of furniture and other wooden articles and pieces of equipment.
*2.Operates a variety of different tools, machines, and pieces of equipment related to the carpentry trade.
*3.Cleans, sharpens, and repairs carpentry tools.
*4.Supervises and instructs inmates in general cleaning and maintenance activities.
*5.Participates in the inspection of inmates for contraband, and maintains security precautions at all times.
6.Instructs helpers in proper carpentry methods and procedures.
*7.Inspects completed work for accuracy and completeness.
*8.Participates in the performance of a variety of routine and emergency noncarpentry maintenance and repair tasks, as required.
*9.Performs duties as Correction Officer on a temporary basis, at the discretion of the Sheriff or his designated officer, as required.

*ADA ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.
Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in the carpentry trade.
2.
Knowledge of the qualities and uses of various woods.
3.
Skill in the care and use of carpentry tools and equipment.
4.
Ability to install, alter, repair, and maintain a variety of wooden articles and equipment.
5.
Ability to supervise and instruct inmates in general cleaning and maintenance activities.
6.
Ability to maintain security precautions.
7.
Ability to respond quickly and efficiently in emergency situations.
8.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
9.
Ability to learn the use and care of firearms.
10.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
11.
Ability to instruct carpenters and other assigned personnel.
12.
Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
1.Completion of vocational school training
and
Four years of satisfactory journey-level experience in the carpentry trade;
or
2.Six years of satisfactory journey-level experience in the carpentry trade.

Necessary Special Requirement
Candidates for this title cannot be approved until they have satisfactory Civil Service medical and psychological reports.
