GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs annual inspections of commercial buildings to ensure the enforcement of fire prevention codes; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties are technical and require the use of independent judgment. The work is reviewed by a superior through conferences, reports, and personal observation.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Inspects business establishments to determine the safety of electrical systems, presence and safety of fire escapes, fire extinguishers and fire exits, and compliance with fire prevention laws.
2.Investigates complaints of fire hazards or violations of fire prevention laws.
3.Reports violations of fire prevention codes, rules, and regulations to property owner and to the Fire Chief.
4.Inspects buildings where flammable liquids and explosives are stored to determine compliance with all regulations pertaining to their storage.
5.Maintains records of all inspections made.

*TYPICAL ADA ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Knowledge of fire prevention principles, practices, and procedures.
2.Knowledge of fire prevention codes, ordinances, and laws.
3.Knowledge of fire hazards involved in various types of construction and in the storage of flammable liquids and explosives.
4.Knowledge of fire inspection methods and techniques.
5.Ability to recognize the existence of fire hazards and violations of laws and regulations.
6.Ability to enforce and explain regulations.
7.Ability to express oneself effectively, both orally and in writing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Graduation from high school
and
Four years of satisfactory service as a volunteer firefighter in Nassau County.

Necessary Special Requirement
1.Certification issued by the State of New York as a Building Safety Inspector or Code Enforcement Official.
2.Certification of completion of The Basic Course for Assistant Fire Inspector issued by the Nassau County Fire Commission.
3."Assistant Fire Inspector" Identification Card issued by the Nassau County Fire Commission.
4.Continuing possession of an appropriate class, Driver License issued by the State of New York.
NOTE:Experience, as outlined above, in excess of the four-year requirement, may be substituted for high school education on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of two years.
