GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Directs and coordinates the maintenance and custodial activities in a penal institution; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties require planning, organizing, and directing the activities of subordinate maintenance personnel and inmates, and requires sound judgment in maintaining institutional security.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Directs, assigns, and coordinates general custodial and maintenance activities.
2.Selects inmate help according to their skills and abilities.
3.Supervises and assigns subordinates and inspects completed work for accuracy and completeness.
4.Requisitions and supervises the issuing of inmates clothes and uniforms.
5.Supervises the inventorying and receiving of supplies and equipment, keeps related records.
6.Prepares work time, equipment estimates and other reports.
7.Supervises and participates in emergency maintenance and repair activities.
8.Performs duties as Correction Officer on a temporary basis, as required, at the discretion of the Sheriff or his designated officer.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in general penal institutional maintenance and custodial activities.
2.Ability to learn the use and care of firearms.
3.Ability to direct, plan, coordinate and inspect the activities of subordinates.
4.Ability to use sound judgment in assigning inmates to specific tasks to insure the maintenance of security precautions and regulations.
5.Ability to use sound judgement in supervising emergency repair and maintenance activities.
6.Ability to inspect and determine the nature and extent of needed repairs and to direct appropriate corrective action.
7.Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records and prepare reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Completion of high school or vocational school training
and
Five years of satisfactory experience in general building maintenance activities including responsibility for storage and/or inventory control of supplies.

Necessary Special Requirement
Candidates for this title cannot be approved until they have satisfactory Civil Service medical and psychological reports.
