This position is in the noncompetitive class. Candidates are selected on the basis of interest in library work and general intelligence. Term of appointment may not exceed three and one half years, during which the incumbent is required to obtain a master's degree in an approved graduate program. The appointment may be terminated if the trainee does not show ability to develop skills in the performance of professional library tasks or adaptability for the work.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Learns and performs increasingly difficult functions of a public librarian under the supervision of professional librarians; pursues a graduate program leading to the master's degree; does related work as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
This is a preprofessional position involving responsibility for learning library procedures, techniques, and skills under professional guidance and for successful completion of an acceptable graduate program. As the trainee progresses in professional ability and skills, he may be assigned increased professional responsibilities and some supervisory responsibilities over the work of nonprofessionals.

TYPICAL DUTIES
Learns and assists in:
1.Library informational, reference, and referral services.
2.Advisory and guidance services.
3.Cataloging and classification of library materials.
4.Compiling booklists.
5.Preparing library exhibits and displays.
6.Conducting book talks, multimedia programs, story and picture book hours, and liaison activities with community groups.
7.Supervising of library pages and other nonprofessional personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Graduation from a four-year college or university recognized by the University of the State of New York.

Special Requirement For Acceptance Of Applications
Prior to appointment: Evidence of eligibility for acceptance in a graduate program, completion of which will qualify the applicant for a New York State public librarian's provisional certificate.

NOTE:Trainee positions are subject to Rules XVII and XIX of the Nassau County Civil Service Rules in relation to term of probation.
