1. | Prepares cadavers for autopsies and assists the pathologist in removing organs. |
2. | Collects various biological samples such as: eye fluids, swabbings for toxicology and serology, and various other body fluids needed for testing. |
3. | Secures tissue and/or organs for special studies, including material for toxicological, microscopic, and bacteriologic examinations. |
4. | Prepares and constructs museum exhibits of medical specimens and related case material. |
5. | Supervises subordinate personnel, as required. |
6. | Takes photographs and x-rays, as required. |
7. | Drives vehicle to the scene of death to transport a body or other evidential material back to the morgue, as required. |
8. | Operates computer terminal to input data, as required. |
1. | Considerable knowledge of modern laboratory equipment, materials, and techniques used in autopsies. |
2. | Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, literature, and current developments in the field of forensic medicine. |
3. | Ability to take photographs and x-rays. |
4. | Ability to supervise the work of subordinates. |
5. | Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and superiors. |

1. | Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with major coursework in a Pathologist Assistant Program; or | |
2. | Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State Registered college or university with major course work in the biological sciences and One year of satisfactory experience assisting in performing autopsies; or | |
3. | Associate's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with major course work in Mortuary Science and Two years of satisfactory experience assisting in performing autopsies; or | |
4. | One year of service as Forensic Pathologist Assistant I. |
NOTE: | Experience, as outlined in 2. above, may be substituted for the educational requirement in 1. or 2. on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of 2 years. |
