GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Directs the medico-legal investigation of all violent, suspicious, sudden, and unexpected deaths in the County of Nassau as required by law; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under executive direction, the duties require the exercise of considerable judgment in developing and implementing policies and procedures for planning, directing and administering the activities of the Office of the Medical Examiner.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Formulates policies, procedures, and methods for the performance of autopsies and histological and pathological examinations to determine cause and manner of death in cases under his jurisdiction.
2.Directs investigations at the scenes of crime or other violent or suspicious deaths.
3.Directs the supervision of laboratories and other physical facilities required for investigation.
4.Determines cause and manner of death in difficult or novel cases.
5.Testifies before grand juries and courts on matters relating to the cause and manner of death.
6.Directs the maintenance of a statistical classification of all deaths under his jurisdiction.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, techniques and current developments in the field of pathologic anatomy and clinical pathology.
2.Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices, literature, and current developments in the field of forensic medicine, including clinical microscopy, toxicology, ballistics, and investigative techniques.
3.Ability to direct, plan, and coordinate the work of a diversified staff of professional and technical personnel.
4.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and law enforcement officers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Graduation from an accredited medical school with a degree of Doctor of Medicine
and
Five years of satisfactory experience in forensic pathology in a Medical Examiner's Office or in a comparable agency.

Necessary Special Requirement
1.Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York.
2.Certification by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and forensic pathology.
