GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Serves as lead worker and performs highly skilled work in the repair and maintenance of fleet automotive equipment; performs related duties as required.s

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the position requires the use of judgment and considerable mechanical skill in automotive repair, and the work is reviewed for quality, accuracy, and completeness.

TYPICAL DUTIES
*1.Performs the more difficult repair work on gasoline and diesel powered automobiles, trucks, sweepers, heavy equipment, and other automotive equipment.
*2.Repairs, overhauls, and replaces transmissions, valves, clutches, brakes, generators, ignition systems, and other automotive parts and equipment.
3.Performs some body and painting work.
*4.Performs periodic inspections, and tunes up equipment to insure proper functioning.
5.Performs emergency road service.
6.Maintains records and prepares reports on work accomplished.
7.May assist in dismantling vehicles in searches for narcotics, contraband, and other evidence.
8.May assist sworn members of Police Department in preserving chain of evidence.
9.May testify in court as witness, as required.

*TYPICAL ADA ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, and equipment used in automotive repair and maintenance.
2.Considerable knowledge of the principles of operation and maintenance of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines.
3.Considerable skill in the care and use of tools and equipment required in repairing and adjusting automotive equipment.
4.Ability to locate, diagnose, and repair defects and malfunctions in automotive equipment.
5.Ability to maintain simple records and to follow oral and written instructions.
6.Ability to learn preservation of chain of evidence procedures.
7.Ability to provide court testimony, as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
1.Completion of technical school training in automotive maintenance
And
Five years of satisfactory experience under a skilled automotive mechanic in the repair of automotive equipment;
OR
2.Seven years of satisfactory full-time experience, as described above.

Necessary Special Requirement
Continuing possession of an appropriate class, valid Driver's License issued by the State of New York.

Necessary Special Requirement for Assignment to Department of Public Works
Continuing possession of a New York State Inspection License with Group 1 (light duty), Group 2 (heavy duty), and Group D (dyno-emissions) endorsements.
