GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Patrols local waters and enforces rules and regulations governing boat traffic, fishing, hunting, shellfishing, conservation, pollution, construction, and boating while intoxicated;; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the position requires the use of judgment regarding individual violations and the use of tact in dealing with the public. Per Article 2, Section 2.10 of the Criminal Procedure Law, an incumbent of this position is designated as Peace Officer, which may involve the use of firearms.

TYPICAL DUTIES

1.
Patrols local waters and enforces rules and regulations governing boat traffic, fishing, hunting, shellfishing, conservation, pollution, construction and boating while intoxicated.

2.
Enforces water safety, construction, antipollution, conservation, boating, hunting, fishing, shellfishing and other related laws, codes, rules and regulations.
*
3.
Seeks, chases, apprehends, and arrests violators to deter abuse of natural resources.
*
4.
Aids and assists distressed boaters and swimmers; administers first aid when necessary.
5.
Takes fish, wildlife, and boat census figures.
*
6.
Photographs and documents evidence of all violations, and cooperates with police authorities in preparing information for presentation to the District Attorney.

7.
Maintains an accurate log book.
*
8.
Conducts classes on boat safety.
*
9.
Cleans and maintains vehicles, vessels and equipment.
*10.Examines and assists in the removal of navigational hazards, such as sunken or derelict craft, logs and debris.
*11.Installs and maintains channel buoys, warning signs, docks and bulkhead lights, navigational aids and markers.
*12.Investigates harbor and waterway conditions following storms and hurricanes and submits reports on silting or water erosion and other physical damage.
*13.Inspects seeding beds and polluted areas for illegal fishing and clamming; issues warnings and summonses to violators, makes summary arrests, as required.
*14.Cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in locating and arresting suspected violators, using forceful arrest methods and/or deadly physical force, as required.
*15.Testifies in court to present evidence to a judge or jury, as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.
Considerable knowledge of all laws, codes, rules and regulations governing the use of local waters, including those pertaining to water safety, construction, antipollution, conservation, boating, hunting, fishing and shellfishing.
2.
Knowledge and understanding of arrest laws and criminal laws.
3.
Skill in self-defense and the use of firearms may be required.
4.
Ability to operate a powered marine vessel.
5.
Ability to respond effectively to emergency situations.
6.
Ability to administer first aid.
7.
Ability to obtain information using the following senses: hearing, vision, smell, and touch.
8.
Ability to teach others in the safe operation of power boats.
9.
Ability to enforce compliance with established rules and regulations.
10.
Ability to perform elementary arithmetic and keep accurate records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Graduation from high school
and
Two years of experience in the operation of motorboats.

Necessary Special Requirement
Proof of possession of a New York State Boating Safety Certificate or proof of completion of a boating safety course approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) or Coast Guard Certificate indicating successful completion of the basic boating skills and seamanship course.
