GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Assists professional social worker in conducting alcoholism rehabilitative counseling; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under supervision of a social worker, the incumbent assists in conducting lay-counseling sessions of admitted alcoholic clients.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Conducts initial individual lay-counseling sessions with newly admitted alcoholic clients.
2.Participates in follow-up counseling sessions to ascertain clients' attitudes, insights and motivations.
3.Assists and participates in group counseling sessions.
4.Gathers and assembles necessary background history and prescribed data for Social Worker.
5.Advises and counsels clients' immediate family.
6.Keeps records and prepares reports.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Knowledge of practices and procedures relating to rehabilitation counseling.
2.Knowledge of individual and group behavior of alcoholics.
3.Knowledge of the personal attributes of an alcoholic.
4.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, associates, and other staff members.
5.Ability to express oneself effectively, both orally and in writing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
1.Graduation from high school
and
Two years of satisfactory paid or volunteer experience as a lay-counselor in a recognized alcoholism treatment facility;
or
2.Completion of one year of study at a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university
and
One year of the above experience.

Necessary Special Requirement
Recovered alcoholic with a minimum of one year of continuous sobriety.
