GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs medicolegal investigations of violent, suspicious, or unexpected deaths; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties require the use of independent judgment in applying methods and procedures in conducting investigations.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Visits scene of death and examines body to ascertain the cause of death.
2.Performs autopsies involving bacteriological, chemical, and pathological examinations.
3.Engages in medicolegal research.
4.Reviews autopsy materials and histological slides prepared by other deputies.
5.Testifies in court and before the Grand Jury.
6.Prepares reports of findings.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, techniques, and current developments in the field of pathologic anatomy and clinical pathology.
2.Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, literature, and current developments in the field of forensic medicine, including clinical microscopy, toxicology, ballistics, and investigative techniques.
3.Ability to use sound professional judgment on the adequacy of forensic-pathological determinations.
4.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, law enforcement officers, and hospital officials.
5.Ability to conduct medicolegal research and prepare reports.
6.Ability to testify effectively in court.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Possession of a current, valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York
and
Completion of a four-year training program in either anatomical/clinical pathology or anatomical/forensic pathology.

NOTE:Certification by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology must be obtained within four years of the start of employment.
