GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Assists in performing paralegal work, preparing simple legal documents, and performing legal research not requiring professional legal competence; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties require discretion and judgment in the application of knowledge of laws, regulations, and departmental practices in performing assignments in support of attorneys.

TYPICAL DUTIES

1.
Assists in interviewing and taking written statements from complainants, potential witnesses, and Village personnel.
*
2.
Participates in legal research.
*
3.
Assists in the preparation of cases for hearings and trials.
*
4.
Records summonses, complaints, and all other pleadings and documents pertaining to litigation.
*
5.
Records information, affidavits, and all other documents pertaining to litigation.
6.
Creates and maintains complete files of legal and court actions, and of related reference material, calendars, and opinions.
*
7.
Compiles and prepares legal documents for presentation by attorneys at hearings and trials.
*
8.
Maintains contact with clerks of various courts regarding procedural status of matters and proceedings.
*
9.
Answers inquiries from the public, attorneys, and others regarding office procedures.
10.
Maintains control and supervision of court calendars and files.
*
11.
Drafts simple documents.
*
12.
Proofreads all office documents and reports to ensure accuracy, completeness, and proper grammatical expression.
* 13.Performs above-described duties in a foreign language, in addition to English, as required.

1.Knowledge of the American legal system and sources of the law.
2.Knowledge of legal documents pertinent to lawsuits.
3.Ability to interpret and apply departmental policies and procedures.
4.Ability to interview and evaluate information from prospective complainants, witnesses, and defendants.
5.Ability to express oneself effectively, both orally and in writing.
6.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental personnel and clients.
7.Ability to comprehend a foreign language in addition to English, and to speak it fluently.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Associate's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university, including or supplemented by a degree or certificate as legal or lawyer's assistant recognized by the American Bar Association or the American Association for Paralegal Education.

NOTE: One year of satisfactory experience performing legal research for an attorney may be substituted for the certificate as legal or lawyer's assistant recognized by the American Bar Association or the American Association for Paralegal Education.
