GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
This is a competitive class trainee position. The period of trainee service shall be not less than one year nor more than two years from the date of appointment from an appropriate eligible list, the service to be of such length as to satisfy the training and experience requirements for Illustrator. Upon the satisfactory completion of the designated trainee service, which also serves as the probation period, an Illustrator Trainee shall attain permanent status as an Illustrator.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under direct supervison, the incumbent assists and receives training in designing, planning, and producing art work; performs related duties as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Receives on-the-job training in the design and preparation of comprehensive layouts and the selection of typeface for graphic materials.
2.Learns and assists in the reproduction of charts, graphs, and maps to designated scale, and the assembling and preparation of statistical charts.
3.Learns and assists in the preparation of layouts for two and three-color overlays for leaflets and flyers.
4.Illustrates layouts by means of photos, sketches, cutouts, cartoons, phototype, and other forms of lettering.
5.Learns and assists in the design of covers for reports, brochures, and leaflets.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Knowledge of the principles and techniques of illustration.
2.Knowledge of the techniques and operations used in the preparation of copy for graphic arts materials.
3.Knowledge of the fundamentals of perspective, design, color, harmony, and composition.
4.Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in illustration.
5.Ability to create effective and artistic formats for books, booklets, and magazines.
6.Ability to prepare designs and illustrations, to do original lettering and layouts, and to prepare related displays.
7.Ability to follow instructions, both oral and written.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Satisfactory completion of two years of study at a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university which included courses in commercial art or closely related field.

NOTE:Trainee positions are subject to Rules XVII and XIX of the Nassau County Civil Service Rules in relation to term of probation.
