GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Assists the Chief Forensic Toxicologist in planning and administering the toxicology laboratory for the Medical Examiner; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties involve the exercise of considerable independent judgment in assisting in directing and coordinating the toxicology laboratory and in supervising subordinates engaged in the chemical examination of tissues and body fluids to determine the cause and circumstance of death.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.
Assists in directing professional and technical staff engaged in the conduct of chemical tests to determine cause of death.
2.
Supervises the analysis of specimens from hospitals and other agencies.
3.
Procures equipment and reagents necessary for laboratory function.
4.
Develops new methods and procedures to increase accuracy and precision of existing tests.
5.
Testifies in court as an expert witness.
6.
Maintains records and standards in compliance with New York State Department of Health regulations.
7.
Publishes new methodology in medical publications.
8.
Maintains laboratory licensure in accordance with regulations of the licensing agency.
9.
Attends scientific meetings and keeps abreast of current literature in analytical toxicology.
10.
Acts for and in place of the Chief Forensic Toxicologist in his absence.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of analytical chemistry as it relates to toxicology.
2.Thorough knowledge of modern laboratory equipment, techniques, and materials.
3.Skill in the use and care of chemical laboratory equipment.
4.Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinates.
5.Ability to develop methods and procedures to be followed in the analyses of a wide variety of toxic agents.
6.Ability to record, organize, analyze, and present data with scientific accuracy and thoroughness.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Doctor of Medicine or Doctoral degree in Toxicology, Chemistry or Pharmacology from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university
and
Five years of satisfactory laboratory experience in forensic toxicology, including one year in a supervisory capacity.

Necessary Special Requirement
Board certified in Forensic Toxicology.
