1. | Performs routine macro- and microscopic documentation and qualitative analysis of physical evidence collected from crime, incident, and vehicular accident scenes. | |
2. | Performs routine physical tests to analyze and reconstruct blood stain patterns and bullet trajectory. | |
3. | Performs routine presumptive chemical tests for blood, semen, projectile components, and gunshot residues. | |
4. | Performs and utilizes routine nondestructive enhancement and documentation techniques at scenes and in the laboratory including the use of film and digital cameras/video recorders, color contrast filters, and specialized illumination techniques. | |
5. | Meets with attorneys, investigators and other related personnel regarding approaches to analysis and results in pretrial conferences. | |
6. | Participates in scientific meetings, seminars, and other training as assigned. | |
7. | Keep records of observations and notes, and issues reports of test results upon consultation with higher level Forensic Scientists in this series. | |
8. | Testifies in court regarding laboratory analyses and the significance of the results as required. | |
9. | Performs housekeeping tasks as required, including maintaining related supplies and reference materials. | |
10. | Participates in internal and external proficiency testing programs. | |
11. | Responds to crime scenes and assists in field examination and the documentation and collection of evidence. | |
12. | May assist in the inventory, maintenance, storage, and disposition of evidence. |

1. | Working knowledge of the principles, practices, instruments, and methods used in crime, incident, and vehicular accident scene reconstruction as applied to the collection of physical evidence. | |

1. | Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree or higher in a natural science, a forensic science, an engineering science, or criminalistics; OR |
2. | Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree or higher, which must have included at least twelve (12) credit hours in one of the natural sciences, forensic sciences or engineering sciences, with one (1) year of full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in a forensics laboratory which must have included crime, incident, and/or vehicular accident scene reconstruction; OR |
3. | Satisfactory completion of one (1) year as a Forensic Scientist Trainee with Reconstruction specialty; OR |
4. | An equivalent combination of training and experience that is defined by the limits of (1) and (2) above. |
NOTE: | Incumbents must pass a competency test prior to assuming casework responsibility, and must pass a proficiency test annually, in accordance with accreditation requirements. |
