GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Prepares the design and layout of art work for the production of a variety of graphic materials; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under direct supervision, the position requires the designing, planning, and production of art work. Assignments are received in the form of work sheets of general objectives, and procedures and techniques are determined independently.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Designs, prepares comprehensive layout, and selects type face for graphic material.
2.Reproduces charts, graphs, and maps to designated scale; assembles and prepares statistical charts.
3.Prepares layouts for two and three-color overlays for leaflets and flyers.
4.Illustrates layouts by means of photos, sketches, cutouts, cartoons, phototype, and other forms of lettering.
5.Designs and letters covers for reports, brochures, and leaflets.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Considerable knowledge of the principles and techniques of illustration.
2.Considerable knowledge of the techniques and operations used in the preparation of copy for graphic arts material.
3.Considerable knowledge of the fundamentals of perspective, design, color, harmony and composition.
4.Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in illustration.
5.Ability to create effective and artistic formats for books, booklets, and magazines.
6.Ability to prepare designs and illustrations, to do original lettering and layouts, and to prepare related displays.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with major course work in commercial art or closely related field.

NOTE:Experience in commercial art or illustration may be substituted for formal education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of six years, provided that course work in art and design has been completed.
