GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs semi-skilled procedures in the care, feeding, preparation, and treatment of laboratory animals and birds; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties require judgment in the maintenance and care of laboratory animals. The work is reviewed for quality, accuracy, and completeness.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Feeds, cleans, maintains, and handles animals and birds.
2.Cleans and sterilizes cages, rooms, instruments and implements, and maintains isolation and quarantine conditions.
3.Prepares animals for operations, tests, and experiments and assists physician.
4.Provides postoperative care and treatment as prescribed.
5.Administers drugs, antibiotics, and anesthetics as directed by veterinarian, doctor, or supervisor.
6.Maintains breeding colonies of small animals and keeps records.
7.Performs euthanasia, gross autopsies, and removes and prepares specimens.
8.Obtains blood and blood samples as required from laboratory animals.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Considerable knowledge of the feeding, care, and handling of animals and birds.
2.Considerable knowledge of safety rules and precautions involved in preparation, treatment, and handling of animals and birds.
3.Knowledge of sterilization, isolation, and quarantine practices and procedures.
4.Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
5.Ability to maintain simple records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Completion of two years of high school
and
Two years of experience in the care of animals in an animal laboratory facility.

NOTE:1.Experience, as outlined above, in excess of the two-year requirement may be substituted for high school on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years.
2.Courses in animal technology may be substituted for the two-year experience requirement.
