GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Drives ambulance to and from emergency situations; provides first aid to patients when required; provides for care and maintenance of cars and ambulances; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties are supervisory and require the use of considerable judgment under emergency conditions.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Drives ambulance to and from emergency situations.
2.Renders first aid to patients when necessary.
3.Renders emergency maternity care when necessary.
4.Notifies hospitals of impending arrival of emergency cases.
5.Transfers patients to and from ambulance; picks up and transports cadavers, as required.
6.Provides assistance in mental hygiene wards when required.
7.Inspects vehicles to insure necessary medical supplies are available.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Considerable knowledge of first aid techniques.
2.Considerable skill and ability in driving vehicles at high rates of speed in a careful manner.
3.Skill and ability to make decisions under emergency conditions.
4.Skill in handling violent patients in as gentle a manner as possible.
5.Ability to make simple written reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Completion of eighth grade education
and
Possession of an appropriate class, valid Driver License issued by the State of New York,
and
Two years satisfactory experience as a driver of a transport vehicle similar to the one to be used in the position; or a fire department vehicle, or an equivalent type of vehicle,
and, either
Certified completion of the advanced American Red Cross First Aid course;
or
Possession of certificate as an Emergency or Advanced Emergency Medical Technician issued by New York State Department of Health.
