GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Maintains safety conditions, participates in rescue operations, renders first aid; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under direct supervision, the duties require prompt and effective action in emergency situations.

TYPICAL DUTIES
*1.Patrols areas and observes activities, enforces safety rules, regulations, and crowd control functions to prevent accidents or injuries.
*2.Assists and/or carries out rescue of helpless swimmers; administers first aid, and applies resuscitation measures, when necessary.
3.Keeps first aid supplies and resuscitation equipment ready for immediate use; maintains guard quarters and guarding areas.
4.May give swimming instructions, if qualified.
5.Participates in training and conditioning drills in swimming and administering first aid.
6.Prepares accident reports.

*ADA ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
1.Knowledge of first aid rescue and resuscitation techniques and equipment.
2.Knowledge of rules and regulations governing the use of water facilities.
3.Considerable swimming skill.
4.Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
GRADE I A or B - Swimming Pool
1.At least fifteen years of age prior to appointment.
2.Satisfactory medical condition attested to by a physician.
3.At least 20/70 vision in one eye, corrected to 20/40.

GRADE II - Calm Water and Swimming Pool
1.At least fifteen years of age prior to appointment.
2.Satisfactory medical condition attested to by a physician.
3.At least 20/40 vision in one eye without corrective lenses.

Training and Experience (continued)
GRADE III - Ocean, Calm Water, and Swimming Pool
1.At least fifteen years of age prior to appointment.
2.Satisfactory medical condition attested to by a physician.
3.At least 20/40 vision in one eye without corrective lenses.

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR
1.At least fifteen years of age prior to appointment.
2.Possession of a valid Water Safety Instructor Certificate issued by the American Red Cross.

Necessary Special Requirements
1.Continuing possession of the appropriate grade, current, valid lifeguard certificate issued by the Nassau County Department of Health or the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums.
2.Continuing possession of a current, valid CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certificate issued by the American Red Cross or a New York State Department of Health accepted equivalent certificate.
