GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Assists in supervising, coordinating, reviewing, and evaluating all activities of a clinical specialty laboratory in the Department of Pathology and Laboratories at the Nassau Health Care Corporation; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties involve the use of some independent judgment in assisting in managing a hospital clinical specialty laboratory, assisting in supervising the interpretation and reporting of test results, and performing advanced laboratory testing in the specialty field. This position is distinguished from Medical Technologist III by virtue of its expanded scope, level of responsibility, and supervisory and administrative responsibility.

TYPICAL DUTIES

1.
Supervises the proper processing of all specimens submitted to the laboratory.

2.
Supervises the interpretation and reporting of specimen test results.
*
3.
Supervises and trains all laboratory personnel in new and improved clinical specialty testing methods and techniques.
*
4.
Performs advanced laboratory testing in the clinical specialty.
*
5.
Assists in developing and evaluating all clinical specialty laboratory procedures, quality control methods, and quality assurance procedures.
*
6.
Assists in developing and evaluating new methodologies and instrumentation to be used in the clinical specialty laboratory testing procedures.
*
7.
Assists in formulating and recommending policies relating to laboratory testing in the clinical specialty.
*
8.
Assists in advising subordinate technical personnel and physicians on diagnostic interpretation of laboratory reports.
9.
Participates in the preparation of the laboratory’s annual budget.

10.
Evaluates and recommends purchase of new laboratory equipment.

Thorough knowledge of modern methods, equipment, and materials used in clinical laboratory testing in the specialty.

Skill in the use and care of modern laboratory equipment relevant to the specialty.

Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of subordinate personnel.
5.
Ability to train and supervise personnel in new and improved laboratory testing methods and techniques in the clinical specialty.

Ability to plan, supervise, and perform advanced laboratory testing in the clinical specialty.
7.
Ability to analyze and interpret complex technical data.
8.
Ability to prepare, and supervise preparation of, detailed, comprehensive, clear, and concise scientific and technical reports.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, accrediting and regulatory agencies, officials, and the medical staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Continuing possession of a certificate of qualification in the appropriate specialty field, issued by the New York State Department of Health
and
Four years of satisfactory, post-doctoral, laboratory testing experience in the specialty field, including one year supervising subordinates performing such tests.
