GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs responsible administrative and supervisory duties in directing the activities for routine screening and special procedures in the preparation and examination of cellular material for detection of malignant cells; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision of a pathologist, the duties are administrative and technical and require planning, organizing, and supervising the activities of subordinates engaged in the preparation and study of cytological specimens.

TYPICAL DUTIES
*1.Administers and supervises the work in the preparation and examination of cytological specimens.
*2.Performs final screening on abnormal cases and refers to pathologist for diagnosis.
*3.Prepares statistical reports and special studies.
4.Participates in in-service training programs.

*ADA ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of cytology.
2.Thorough knowledge of the operation and care of specialized laboratory equipment.
3.Skill in manipulative techniques in following standard laboratory procedures.
4.Ability to administer, train, and supervise others in performing routine and complex operations in the cytology laboratory.
5.Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
6.Ability to undertake special studies in the field of cytology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
1Continuing possession of a current, valid, license to practice as a Cytotechnologist issued by the New York State Education Department,
and, either
A. Five years of satisfactory, full-time, experience as a Cytotechnologist in an approved
cytology laboratory
or
B. Registration as a Cytotechnologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
(ASCP)
and
Four years of satisfactory, full-time, experience as a Cytotechnologist in an approved
cytology laboratory;
or

2.Possession of a Permit to practice as a Cytotechnologist at the Nassau Health Care Corporation issued by the New York State Education Department.
and, either
A. Five years of satisfactory, full-time, experience as a Cytotechnologist in an approved cytology laboratory
or
B. Registration as a Cytotechnologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)
and
    Four years of satisfactory, full-time, experience as a Cytotechnologist in an approved cytology laboratory.
