GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs laboratory procedures on biological specimens in order to aid in the detection of disease; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the position is professional and requires the use of independent judgment. The work is subject to review by a supervisor through observation during performance, and occasional retests performed by higher level medical technologists.

TYPICAL DUTIES
*
1.Prepares and stains slides from specimens and examines them under a microscope to determine the presence, identification, and quantity of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and other micro-organisms.
*
2.Assists in determining the presence of pathogenic organisms.
*
3.Cultures specimens such as fluids, erudates, tissue, and water samples to determine presence of specific types of organisms, and identifies them by microscopic examination and other tests.
*
4.Performs diagnostic technical work.
*
5.Conducts bacteriological surveys at sites where food or water is supplied.
*
6.Tests media for sterility and fitness for use by presence of visible organisms.
*
7.Maintains records and prepares reports related to tests and examinations performed.
8.Undertakes special studies, as required.

1.Knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices used with emphasis on culture and diagnostic methods.
2.Knowledge of the use, operation, and care of laboratory equipment.
3.Knowledge of the basic principles of the biological sciences and chemistry.
4.Skill in the use and care of laboratory equipment.
5.Ability to perform prolonged microscopic work.
6.Ability to express oneself effectively, both orally and in writing.
7.Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
8.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
1. Continuing possession of a current, valid, license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist issued by the New York State Education Department;
or
2. Possession of a permit to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist at the Nassau Health Care Corporation issued by the New York State Education Department.
