GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Assists in planning, directing, and administering all activities at the Office of the Medical Examiner; acts for and in place of the Chief Medical Examiner; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under supervision, the duties require the exercise of considerable judgment in assisting in planning, directing, and administering the activities at the Office of the Medical Examiner.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Supervises the tour investigations and autopsies and consults with the Chief Medical Examiner.
2.Develops schedules for tour deputies and professional laboratory staff.
3.Visits scene of death and examines body to ascertain cause.
4.Performs autopsies involving bacteriological, chemical, and pathological examination.
5.Testifies in court and before the Grand Jury.
6.Assists in supervising the maintenance of records and the preparation of professional reports.
7.Supervises the Medical Examiner's Office in the absence of the Chief Medical Examiner.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, techniques, and current developments in the field of pathologic anatomy and clinical pathology.
2.Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, literature, and current developments in the field of forensic medicine, including clinical microscopy, toxicology, ballistics and investigative techniques.
3.Ability to exercise a high degree of ingenuity and independent judgment in solving complex problems arising in the performance of postmortem examinations.
4.Ability to plan, assign, review, and coordinate the work of diversified professional and technical personnel, and train them in the various phases of medico-legal work.
5.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, law enforcement officers, and hospital officials.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Graduation from an accredited medical school with a degree of Doctor of Medicine and either,
a.Three years of satisfactory experience in forensic pathology
and
Certification by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and forensic pathology
or

b.Ten years of satisfactory experience in forensic pathology
and
Certification in anatomic pathology and eligibility for certification in forensic pathology by the American Board of Pathology.

Necessary Special Requirement
Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in New York State.
