GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
This is a competitive class trainee position. The period of trainee service shall be not less than one year nor more than two years from the date of appointment from an appropriate eligible list, the service to be of such designated length as to satisfy the training and experience requirements for Code Enforcement Inspector. Upon the satisfactory completion of the designated trainee service, which also serves as the probationary period, a Code Enforcement Inspector Trainee, Bilingual, shall attain permanent status as a Code Enforcement Inspector, Bilingual.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under direct supervision, assists Code Enforcement Inspectors, and receives training in performing inspections to enforce various village ordinances and codes such as zoning, housing and rehabilitation, refuse, streets and sidewalks, fire prevention and control, and other similar ones; performs related duties as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES

1.
Learns and assists in inspecting building construction, alterations, and repairs to determine compliance with all applicable codes and ordinances, health regulations, specifications, adequate workmanship, and proper quality of materials used.

2.
Learns and assists in inspecting cesspool and sewer connections and plumbing and heating installations to insure proper location, size, quality, and workmanship as prescribed by codes, ordinances, and regulations.
*
3.
Learns and assists in informing dwelling owners or responsible representatives, orally and in writing, of violations, and suggesting corrective measures to remove them; reinspects premises and approves corrective actions, or reports continued violations.
*
4.
Learns and assists in inspecting residential, industrial, and commercial properties to verify that garbage or refuse is placed for collection and empty cans removed as per codes and/ordinances.
*
5.
Learns and assists in inspecting street and sidewalk construction, alterations, and repairs to insure adherence to legal requirements.
*
6.
Learns and assists in investigating, researching, and inspecting properties for zoning variances and compliance with ordinances.
7.
Learns and assists in inspecting commercial, industrial, residential, and school buildings for compliance with the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code.

8.
Learns and assists in preparing reports and maintains accurate records of inspections, violations, reinspections, and final disposition of cases.

9.
Learns and assists in taking samples of materials for laboratory testing by engineers.
*
10.
Learns and assists in giving fire safety lectures at schools.
*
11.
Learns to issue summonses and testify at trials.
*
12.
Performs the above-described duties in a foreign language, in addition to English.

Ability to comprehend a foreign language, in addition to English, and to speak it fluently.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Graduation from high school.

Necessary Special Requirement
Possession of an appropriate class, valid Driver's License issued by the State of New York.
NOTE:Trainee positions are subject to Rules XVII and XIX of the Nassau County Civil Service Rules in relation to term of probation.
