GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs duties related to the care, feeding, and treatment of horses and the maintenance of their surroundings; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties require the use of judgment in the care of horses and include responsibility for the maintenance of stables and related equipment.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Inspects horses on each tour of duty for sickness or injury, calling veterinarian if necessary.
2.Assists veterinarian in handling horses, carrying out prescribed recommended treatment.
3.Feeds and grooms horses.
4.Keeps barn and surrounding areas in sanitary conditions.
5.Cleans stalls and replaces bedding, if required.
6.Prepares horses for assigned patrol.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Thorough knowledge of the care, feeding, and handling of horses.
2.Ability to administer injections, clean and dress wounds, and mix proper medication.
3.Ability to perform custodial duties in maintenance of barn and corral.
4.Ability to recognize signs of sickness or injury in horses.
5.Ability to understand and follow instructions, both oral and written.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Associate's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with major course work in animal science or animal husbandry
and
Two years of satisfactory experience in the care and handling of horses.

NOTE:Experience, as outlined above, in excess of the two-year requirement may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of six years.
