GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Directs and coordinates the activities of highway maintenance personnel engaged in road patching, street sweeping, drain and catch basin cleaning, seal coating, road marking, snow removal, and related highway maintenance activities; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties require the use of considerable judgment in directing, planning, and coordinating the activities of subordinate personnel.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Directs the maintenance, storage, and requisitioning of all road maintenance supplies and equipment.
2.Inspects roads to determine repair and maintenance needs and directs appropriate action.
3.Prepares reports on work distribution, labor costs, material usage, and work accomplished.
4.Meets with the public and other interested parties concerning road maintenance problems and directs the investigation of complaints.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Thorough knowledge of the materials, methods, and equipment used in highway maintenance.
2.Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions related to the work.
3.Ability to direct and coordinate the activities of highway maintenance personnel.
4.Ability to inspect and evaluate road conditions.
5.Ability to act quickly and efficiently in emergency situations.
6.Ability to estimate labor and equipment needs and costs.
7.Ability to maintain detailed records and prepare reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Graduation from high school or vocational school
and
Five years of satisfactory experience in highway maintenance or construction activities that includes the operation of motorized equipment and one year in a supervisory capacity.

Necessary Special Requirement
Possession of an appropriate class, Driver license issued by the State of New York.

NOTE:Experience, as outlined above, in excess of the five-year requirement, may be substituted for high school or vocational school education on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of two years.
