GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Provides primary care, including examinations and treatment of illness, assessments, and diagnostic/therapeutic procedures. Initiates preventative strategies, provides counseling, and detects and treats illness. Plans, organizes, coordinates, implements, and evaluates specific clinical and educational programs and patient care in a hospital, ambulatory care, and community facility; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, incumbents of this position have collaborative agreements with physicians according to the New York State Department of Education Law. The position provides for expanded nursing services which include examinations, counseling, and screening of patients; developing and implementing a plan of care for the patient, and prescribing and dispensing medication within established guidelines. This position differs from the next level up in that it is the entry-level, requiring no Nurse Practitioner experience.

TYPICAL DUTIES

Interviews, assesses, examines, diagnoses, and treats patients.

Performs and records findings of the examination.

Requests and/or performs diagnostic procedures.

4.
Evaluates diagnostic reports, and initiates a treatment plan.

5.
Prescribes and/or dispenses medications and treatments according to established protocols.

Prepares reports of medical examination.
*
7.
Counsels patients and their families concerning physical, mental, and psychosocial health.
8.
Refers to other health care specialists and community agencies.
9.
Develops an education plan for patients and their families.
10.
Participates in community education programs.
11.
Participates in specialty programs and research studies.
12.
Collaborates with professional and ancillary staff.
13.
Develops and/or provides staff education and evaluation.
14.
Plans and assigns work of professional and ancillary health care personnel in hospital, ambulatory, and/or community settings.
15.
Participates in accredited ongoing programs of continuing education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Continuing possession of both a license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State, and certification by the New York State Department of Education as a Nurse Practitioner reflecting the specialty required by the position.
