GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs postmortem examinations in the investigation of violent, suspicious, or unexpected deaths; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under supervision, the duties require the exercise of independent judgment in applying methods and procedures to carrying out investigations.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Visits scene of death; examines body to ascertain cause of death.
2.Investigates facts concerning circumstances of death; determines necessity for an autopsy.
3.Consults with Chief Medical Examiner and pathologists on all cases.
4.Investigates circumstances of death when permit to cremate body is requested.
5.Prepares reports of investigations.
6.Testifies in court and before the Grand Jury, as requested.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of medicine.
2.Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of medical investigative techniques.
3.Ability to exercise independent judgment in solving problems arising from the performance of postmortem examinations.
4.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement officers, hospital officials, and staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Possession of a current valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York.
