GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Participates in an internship program that covers all aspects of the work of a horticulturist; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under the direct supervision of a professional horticulturist, incumbents serve an internship, not to exceed sixteen (16) weeks in length, that involves the maintenance and care of trees, shrubs, bushes, and flowers in ornamental, natural, and formal grounds and gardens.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Participates in various horticultural activities, such as, seeding, budding, grafting, weeding, spraying, transplanting, and pruning.
2.Prepares and uses chemical mixes for the spraying and feeding of plants.
3.Operates and maintains the vehicles, tools, and equipment involved in horticultural activities.
4.Maintains records of plant materials and equipment.
5.Demonstrates and/or explains work to the public.
6.Performs research on assigned projects.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Knowledge of the methods, materials, practices, and equipment used in horticultural activities.
2.Ability to learn to maintain and care for various trees, shrubs, bushes, and flowers.
3.Ability to prepare and use chemicals for feeding and spraying of plants.
4.Ability to meet and address the public tactfully and courteously.
5.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
6.Ability to perform research and maintain records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Graduation from high school
and
Two years of satisfactory horticultural experience, including the maintenance of trees, shrubs, bushes, and flowers.

NOTE:Education, from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university, with major coursework in the field of horticulture, may be substituted for the work experience described above on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of two years.
