GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Admits and discharges hospital patients; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties require the exercise of judgment in admitting and discharging hospital patients.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.
Admits and discharges hospital patients.

Screens admission calls as to degree of emergency and eligibility.
*
3.
Interviews patients or families to obtain personal data.
*
4
Explains hospital and clinic regulations, assigns patients to wards.
*
5
Receives and processes death notices; secures autopsy permission; makes arrangements to release bodies.
*

Receives and processes birth notices.
7.
Answers queries regarding patients' condition.
*
8
Takes census of patients admitted, registered and/or discharged.
9
Assists nursing and provider teams in patient flow.
10.
Communicates with patients and families either in-person or through telephone/messaging for scheduling, registration, admission, or discharge.

*ADA ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Knowledge of hospital admission policies and procedures.
2.Knowledge of hospital emergency procedures.
3.Knowledge of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) regulations.
4.Skill and ability in dealing with people in stress situations.
5.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Graduation from high school
and
Two years of satisfactory general office experience in a hospital or health-related environment.

NOTE:1. Experience, as outlined above, in excess of the two-year requirement, may be substituted for
high school education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years.
2.Education at a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university
(30 credits) may be substituted for one year of the above-mentioned experience.
