GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Participates in performing skilled work in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment in a penal institution; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under direct supervision, the position requires the use of mechanical skills in automotive repair; the work is reviewed for quality, accuracy, and completeness and requires judgment in maintaining institutional security.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Participates in performing repair work on gasoline and diesel powered automobiles, trucks, and other automotive equipment.
2.Performs minor body repairs.
3.Pumps gas; changes oil; lubricates, cleans radiators; fixes flats; replaces batteries; washes equipment; performs other routine automotive servicing.
4.Performs tune-ups of equipment to insure proper functioning.
5.May perform emergency road repairs, as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Knowledge of the methods and practices of automotive maintenance.
2.Skill in the care and use of tools and equipment employed in making routine repairs and adjustments to automotive equipment.
3.Ability to learn to locate, diagnose, and repair defects and malfunctions in automotive equipment.
4.Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
1.Completion of vocational school training in automotive maintenance and repair
or
2.Two years of satisfactory experience under a skilled journeyman in the repair of automobiles.

Necessary Special Requirement
1.Candidates for this title cannot be approved until they have satisfactory Civil Service medical and psychological reports.
2.Possession of an appropriate class, valid driver license issued by the State of New York.
