GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Supervises inmates and performs repair, service and maintenance work on automotive equipment in a penal institution; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under direct supervision, the position requires planning, organizing, and assigning the work of subordinates, the use of judgment and skill; the work is reviewed for quality, accuracy, completeness, and requires sound judgment in maintaining institutional security.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Assists in planning and assigning the work of subordinate automotive mechanics.
2.Performs skilled repair work on automobiles, trucks, vans and other automotive equipment.
3.Repairs, overhauls, or replaces spark plugs, valves, clutches, generators and other automotive parts and equipment.
4.Trouble shoots, road tests and tunes up equipment to insure efficiency.
5.Inspects inmates for contraband and maintains security precautions at all times.
6.Maintains inventory of supplies, keeps service, mileage and other records, prepares reports.
7.Performs emergency road service.
8.Performs duties as a Correction Officer on a temporary basis, as required, at the discretion of the Sheriff or his designated officer.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices used in automotive repair and maintenance.
2.Knowledge of the principles of the operation and construction of internal combustion engines.
3.Skill in the care and use of tools and equipment employed in repairing and adjusting automotive equipment.
4.Ability to locate, diagnose and repair defects and malfunctions in automotive equipment.
5.Ability to maintain security precautions.
6.Ability to maintain inventories and to keep records and prepare reports.
7.Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
8.Ability to learn the use and care of firearms.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
1.Completion of vocational school training in automotive maintenance and repair
and
Four years of satisfactory experience in the field of automotive mechanics;
or
2.Six years of satisfactory experience in the field of automotive mechanics.

Necessary Special Requirement
1.Candidates for this title cannot be approved until they have satisfactory Civil Service medical and psychological reports.
2.Possession of an appropriate class, valid driver license as issued by the State of New York.
