GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Supervises the design and layout of art work for the production of a variety of graphic materials for public information and educational programs; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties involve the supervision of a small unit engaged in designing, planning, and production of art work.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Designs and produces art work for exhibit, displays, and publications.
2.Supervises subordinate employees in the production of art work.
3.Selects supplies and equipment for art unit.
4.Administers budget for art unit.
5.Maintains records and prepares reports.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of illustration.
2.Thorough knowledge of the techniques and operations used in the preparation of copy for graphic arts materials.
3.Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of perspective, design, color, harmony, and composition.
4.Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in illustration.
5.Ability to create effective and artistic formats for books, booklets, and magazines.
6.Ability to prepare designs and illustrations, to do original lettering and layouts, and to prepare related displays.
7.Ability to supervise the work of others.
8.Ability to maintain simple records and prepare simple reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with major course work in commercial art or closely related field.
and
One year of experience in commercial art or illustration.

NOTE:Experience, as outlined above, in excess of the one year required may be substituted for formal education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of six years, provided that course work in art and design has been completed.
