GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Assists Correctional Center medical clinic personnel with inmate examinations and clinic maintenance; assists in providing security by maintaining order and supervising the conduct of inmates in the Correctional Center medical clinic; provides emergency first aid to inmates and staff as needed; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties require the use of judgment in providing medical assistance to inmates and staff and protecting Correctional Center medical clinic personnel.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.
Notifies floor supervisors when inmates are needed for sick call, and determines which inmates are to be examined or treated.
2.
Maintains treatment and medication log during sick call.

3.
Assists in the conduct of clinical examinations, and in providing treatments such as the application of bandages and dressings.
4.
Records weight and height measurements of inmates prior to examinations.

5.
Collects and delivers specimens for examinations to the Medical Center or Health Department.
6.
Maintains inventory of medication and medical supplies.
7.
Sterilizes and stores medical instruments.
8.
Maintains sanitary conditions in the medical clinic.

9.
Arranges for inmate examinations at the Medical Center.

10.
Provides emergency first aid to inmates and staff, as required.

* ADA ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Considerable knowledge of first aid techniques, and all phases of medical emergency technology.
2.Knowledge of basic routines in the operation of a health clinic and the examination of patients.
3.Ability to learn the care and use of firearms.
4.Ability to supervise inmates and maintain security precautions.
5.Ability to maintain records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Graduation from high school
and, either:
a.Two years of satisfactory experience as an assistant to a medical doctor in the examination and treatment of patients,
or
b.Two years of satisfactory, paid or formal volunteer, experience rendering first aid.

Necessary Special Requirements
Candidates for this title cannot be approved until they have satisfactory Civil Service medical and psychological reports.
and
Continuing possession of a valid certificate as an Emergency Medical Technician issued by the New York State Department of Health;
or
Continuing possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of New York.
