GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Assists in the maintenance, care, feeding and preparation of laboratory animals and birds, performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under direct supervision, the duties are routine and the work is reviewed for quality, accuracy and completeness.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1.Prepares food and feeds animals as directed.
2.Maintains animal quarters and cleans and sterilizes cages and instruments.
3.Handles animals, cleans and assists in checking for disease or sores.
4.Assists in preparation and care of animals and birds used in tests, experiments and operations.
5.Assists in maintaining breeding colonies of small animals and keeping records.
6.Assists in administering drugs, antibiotics and anesthetics.
7.Learns how to perform euthanasia, gross autopsies, and how to remove and prepare specimens.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Knowledge of the general care, feeding and handling of animals and birds.
2.Knowledge of safety precautions required in the care and handling of animals.
3.Ability to perform custodial duties in the maintenance of animal quarters.
4.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
1.No formal education requirement.
2.One year of experience in the general care of small animals.
NOTE:Course work in animal technology may be substituted for the one year of required experience.
