* | 1. | Assists Sheriff in administration, and policy and procedure formulation for the Department. | |
* | 2. | Coordinates departmental procedures for the execution of mandates, and legal orders, including the final distribution of collected monies. | |
* | 3. | Advises subordinates concerning unusual problems, including legal issues related to the Civil Practice Law and Rules, and the Correction Law. | |
* | 4. | Conducts meetings to discuss particular problems and policy matters. | |
* | 5. | Trains and supervises the activities of deputy sheriffs and clerical staff. | |
* | 6. | Accounts for all monies received, and submits monthly financial statements. | |
* | 7. | Reviews monthly reports on the activities of Deputy Sheriffs. | |
* | 8. | Meets with individual citizens to discuss relevant issues. | |
* | 9. | Advises the public in situations requiring the service of court orders on large groups. | |
* | 10. | Acts for, and in place of, the Undersheriff and/or Sheriff, as required. | |
* | 11. | Participates in the initiation and development of new and revised policies and procedures. | |
12. | Undertakes special projects, as required. |
1. | Extensive knowledge of the legal requirements for serving and enforcing legal processes. |
2. | Thorough knowledge of the forms and procedures applicable to serving legal processes. |
3. | Considerable knowledge of administrative procedures and policies in the Sheriff's Office. |
4. | Knowledge of the principles of office management. |
5. | Ability to train, plan, organize, and supervise supervisory deputy sheriffs and clerical staff. |
6. | Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public. |
7. | Ability to maintain records and prepare reports. |
8. | Ability to develop methods and procedures to improve office functioning. |

a. | Eight years of satisfactory corrections or law enforcement experience, including five years in an administrative, supervisory, or staff capacity; or |
b. | Thirteen years of satisfactory corrections or law enforcement experience. |
NOTE: | 1. | Experience, as outlined above, in excess of the eight-year requirement in (A) or thirteen-year requirement in (B), may be substituted for college education on a year-for-year basis. |
2. | Candidates for this title cannot be approved until they have satisfactory Civil Service medical and psychological reports. |
