GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Conducts, participates in, and provides technical support for investigations undertaken by the District Attorney's Office; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties require the use of judgment in installing and operating equipment and instruments necessary to perform criminal investigations.

TYPICAL DUTIES
*
1.Installs court authorized electronic eavesdropping equipment; determines and implements the most suitable means of electronically intercepting wire, cellular, and oral communication.
*
2.Gathers and preserves all evidence obtained from such equipment in accordance with evidentiary chain of custody rules, and testifies in court in relation to same.
*
3.Repairs, maintains, and safely stores all electronic investigative equipment, including laser and wiretap equipment, pen registers, and trace and trap devices used in covert investigations.
*
4.Protects and secures all such evidence from tampering, and ascertains its viability for court admissibility.
*
5.Instructs and trains all District Attorney investigative personnel in the proper use and maintenance of such equipment, and in the rules relating to chain of custody and preservation of integrity of such evidence.
*
6.Engages in surveillance and uses technical equipment in undercover investigations.
7.Makes arrests and participates in arraignment procedures.

*ADA ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Thorough knowledge of investigative principles, practices, and methods.
2.Thorough knowledge of courtroom procedures, criminal trials, criminal procedure law, the penal law, and especially laws and court decisions relating to the use of wiretapping and eavesdropping devices.
3.Considerable knowledge of the capabilities of audio and video recording and surveillance devices.
4.Knowledge of the proper evidentiary foundations for the introduction in court of evidence seized pursuant to the use of such court devices.
5.Ability to design, maintain, repair, install, and operate electronic surveillance equipment.
6.Ability to instruct others in the use of electronic surveillance equipment.
7.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
8.Ability to express oneself effectively, both orally and in writing.
9.Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university, with a major in criminal justice
and
Seven years of satisfactory experience as a criminal investigator which included three years with responsibilities for installing and using electronic surveillance equipment.

NOTE:Experience, as outlined above, in excess of the seven-year requirement, may be substituted for college education, on a year-for-year basis.
